Sing Along at The Strand. “The Sound of Music,” the 1965 classic movie about a feisty nun attempting to tame the unruly von Trapp children, will play at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre this Saturday at 8 p.m. During the film, the lyrics to the musical numbers will appear on the screen so that the audience can sing along.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for seniors, students and military members. Get there early for preshow entertainment. For more information, click here.

Sample Smyrna. Take a bite out of some of your favorite restaurants this Saturday at the Taste of Smyrna, a full day of music, entertainment and, of course, food on the city’s Village Green.

Zucca, Atkins Park, Jocks & Jills, Siracusa’s Pizza, Marietta Fish Market, Barbecue Street, Smallcakes Cupcakery and a number of your other favorite restaurants will be there serving samples ranging in price from $1 to $4. Admission is free. 

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Village Green is located at 200 Village Green Circle. Check for updates on the event’s Facebook page. 

Shred It with Smyrna. Do you need to securely dispose of personal documents? Keep Marietta Beautiful is offering a free document-shredding day this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. You can bring up to 100 pounds of paper to be securely shredded.

The event takes place at the Wolfe Adult Recreation Center, located at 884 Church Street in Smyrna. For more information, call 770-431-2863.

Crunching Numbers. Join the Cobb Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Sept. 17, as it hosts a Business University session entitled “Performance and Success with QuickBooks,” a two-hour presentation by Wendy Lerner, a certified QuickBooks Pro advisor. She will provide an introduction on how to set your company up in the program and also will explain how to enter checks and deposits, create invoices, and receive payments.

The presentation will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chamber’s headquarters at 240 Interstate North Parkway. This event is free to attend.

Classic Film. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the 1962 masterpiece about racism in the South starring Gregory Peck as lawyer Atticus Finch, will be shown at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre this Friday at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for seniors, students and military members. Get there early for some preshow entertainment. For more information, click here.

Music on the Square. Mark your calendars for the next Brown Bag Concert, which takes place at Glover Park on the Marietta Square next Thursday, Sept. 11. Bring your lunch and coworkers, and enjoy free, live music from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Great Habits. Join the Cobb Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Sept. 11, as it hosts a Business University session entitled “The 8th Habit – From Effectiveness to Greatness,” a two-hour presentation by Tim Rye, president and general manager of RYECO Inc. He will discuss best methods for achieving greatness in today’s workplace.

The presentation will take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Chamber’s headquarters at 240 Interstate North Parkway. Chamber members can register for $25 online and $30 at the door. General admission is $50.

A Fashionable Lunch. Attend the Cobb Executive Women’s luncheon on Friday, Sept. 12, for the group’s annual Fall Fashion Show featuring the latest tends from Dressbarn.

The event will be held at Mansour Center, located at 995 Roswell Street in Marietta. The doors will open at 11 a.m. for networking, and the program will start at 11:15 a.m.

Part of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Cobb Executive Women is a group dedicated to enhancing and supporting the relationships between professional women in the county.

For group members, tickets are $20 online and $35 at the door. For the general public, the prices are $30 online and $45 at the door. Online registration, which can be completed here, ends at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

A Night Under The Stars. Celebrate summer’s arrival with a movie night outside. Grab a blanket and some popcorn and visit Taylor-Brawner Park in Smyrna this Saturday for a screening of the family-favorite movie “Monster’s University.”

The event is free to attend, and the movie begins at dark. Taylor-Brawner Park is located at 3180 Atlanta Road. Click here for more information.

Showstopper. The Atlanta Ballet’s “MAYhem,” billed as “a no-holds-barred explosion of creativity and energy” comesto the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre this weekend. The show will feature the world premiere of two dance pieces.

The first performance is this Friday at 8:00 p.m. Other performances will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Show times and tickets are available at Ticketmaster.

Healthy Knowledge. The Gluten & Allergen Free Expo is making its way to the Cobb Galleria Centre this weekend to educate people on the benefits of a gluten-free diet. The event will feature classes on gluten-free eating, food samples and discounted products from vendors.

Let’s Talk Transportation. Join the Cobb Chamber’s Smyrna Area Council next Thursday, May 22, when it hosts a transportation panel that will discuss issues surrounding local roads such as Atlanta Road and I-285, and also provide an update on the transportation plan for the new Braves stadium. The panel will feature Cobb DOT Director Faye DiMassimo, CCT Transit Manager Gayle Franklin and City of Smyrna Engineer Eric Randall.

The panel will last from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Brawner Hall, located at 1380 Atlanta Road.  Chamber members can register for $15 online and $25 at the door. General admission is $25 online and $35 at the door.

The Sun Will Come Out. Lovers of the little orphan that put a smile on everyone’s face will want to catch The Atlanta Lyric Orchestra’s presentation of “Annie,” a musical that has won seven Tony Awards, this month at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in the Cobb Civic Center.

The musical features such classics as “Tomorrow,” “Hard Knock Life” and “Easy Street.”

The show runs from Friday, April 4, through Sunday, April 20. Tickets range from $32 to $52. Visit the Atlanta Lyric Theater website for show times and to purchase tickets.

Double Feature. Take a trip back to the groovy 1960s and the cool 1950s by attending movie screenings at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta this weekend.

“Goldfinger,” the 1964 classic featuring Sean Connery as James Bond, will be shown at 8 p.m. on Friday.

“American Graffiti,” a George Lucas-directed film that follows a group of teenagers in the 1950s as they spend their last summer together before going to college, will be shown at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Both showings will feature live organ pre-shows at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to either show are $8 for adults and $7 for seniors, students and military members. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Fly Away. See Marietta in a whole new way this Saturday by taking a helicopter ride. Blue Ridge Helicopters will be conducting round-trip rides from the Aviation Wing of the Marietta Museum of History to Kennesaw Mountain from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each ride can accommodate up to three people.

The cost per flight is $40 per person, cash only, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Aviation Wing. The Aviation Wing is located at 550 Perrin Road in Marietta. Visit the Marietta Museum of History website for more information.

A Love Story. Oneof the greatest love stories of all time comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre this weekend in the form of the Atlanta Ballet’s production of “Romeo et Juliette.” The show will feature the accompaniment of the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, which will be led by guest conductor Ari Pelto.

The first performance is this Friday at 8:00 p.m. Other performances will be on Feb. 8, 9, 13, 14 and 15. Show times and tickets are available at Ticketmaster.

Valentine’s Dance Party. The Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw will be the site of a family-oriented and water-themed Valentine’s Day dance this Saturday evening. The Enchantment Under the Sea dance will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature dancing, games, prizes, photo opportunities, an “all-you-care-to-eat” dinner and desserts. A pirate DJ will provide music. According to the event description, “all adults must be accompanied by a child, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.”

Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online by clicking here. Children ages 2 and under do not need a ticket. The Ben Robertson Community Center is located at 2753 Watts Drive in Kennesaw.

Movie Screenings at The Strand. Take a trip back to old Hollywood by attending some of the screenings at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta this weekend.

“Citizen Kane,” Orson Welles’ classic first film and one he based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, the unforgettable American newspaper publisher, will be shown at 8 p.m. on Friday.

“The Godfather,” an Academy Award-winning film from 1972 that focuses on the transfer of an organized crime ring from father to son, will be shown at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Jingle All The Way. For a fun treat while you're doing your holiday shopping, head on over to Vinings Jubilee this Friday. Shoppers can enjoy complimentary horse-drawn sleigh rides around the shopping center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Disney Junior Live! See beloved Disney characters Sofia the First, Jake and the Neverland Pirates when the “Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate & Princess Adventure” comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre this weekend. The show includes songs and appearances by Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Breakfast with Santa. If you haven't had a chance to tell Santa all of your Christmas wishes, then you'll have your chance this Saturday. Several J. Christopher's restaurants — include one in Kennesaw and two in Marietta — will host breakfasts with Santa that day.

Children will have the chance to take complimentary photos with Santa, tell him their Christmas lists, and enjoy a hearty breakfast with him and Mrs. Claus.

Miracle on 34th Street. Come toThe Earl Smith Strand Theatre this Sunday evening for a showing of a Christmas classic: the movie “Miracle on 34th Street.”

This 1947 film presents the touching story of people who attend the Macy's Day Parade on Thanksgiving and begin to wonder if the department store’s Santa is the real one.

Run & Eat. Before your carve your turkeys and set your tables, head over to the Marietta Square and burn some calories by running in the 11th Annual Gobble Jog on Thanksgiving morning. This race draws thousands of runners each year, and all the proceeds benefit MUST Ministries, an organization that helps the homeless and underprivileged in a variety of ways.

It’s not too late to register. If you want a timed-race entry, you can register today from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 56 Whitlock Road. If you want an untimed entry, you can register on race day.  Registration ranges from $40 to $45. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m., and the race begins at 7:30 a.m.

Mellow Music Comes to Cobb. Rising star Amos Lee will perform this Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Cobb Energy Centre. Amos pulls his musical inspiration from soul music, contemporary jazz and 1970s folk artists. He has toured with Norah Jones and recently released an album titled “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song.”

Tickets range from $25 to $43 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.

Grease is the Word! The Earl Smith Strand Theatre presents a night of T-Birds and Pink Ladies this Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. with a showing of the classic 1978 movie “Grease” starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. And don’t worry about having to be quiet: the audience is invited to sing along with the film!

Santa Is on the Run. What better way to kick off the month of December than by participating in the Santa Fun on Sunday, Dec. 1, in Kennesaw? Proceeds from this 5K will benefit sick, disadvantaged and special-needs children. Race participants can choose to walk or run.

The Santa Run is an international event in which thousands participate in individual races around the world. Registration costs $25 to $35 and can be completed by clicking here or at the race site. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. at 1990 Vaughn Rd.

Let’s Have a Songversation. Musical artist India.Arie will perform this Friday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Her current concert series follows the recent release of her fifth studio album, “Songversation.”

Tickets range from $38 to $94 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster or at the Bank of North Georgia Box Office at Cobb Energy Centre.

Busy Weekend on the Square. The Marietta Square is the place to be this weekend for lots of family fun. For starters, the Harvest Square Arts & Crafts Festival will take place there on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Held in conjunction with the festival, Halloween Happenings, an annual event for children ages 12 and younger, will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature a variety of activities, such as costume contests for both children and pets.

Free parking will be available in the Cobb County Parking Garage on Cherokee Street.

Additionally, the third annual Marietta Zombie Walk will be held on the Square on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

All proceeds from the walk will benefit MUST ministries, and canned food donations will be accepted throughout the event. After the walk, there will be a double feature of the movies “Attack of the Monsters” and “Night of the Living Dead” in Glover Park, which will last until 11 p.m.

Superheroes vs. Villains. Dress up as your favorite superhero or villain and participate in the Superheroes vs. Villains 5K race this Saturday. The race will start at 8 a.m. at Required Fitness in west Cobb, near the intersection of Mary Eliza Trace and Due West Road. The event will also feature a fun run for kids and the Superhero Super Block Party, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Registration costs $30 before Saturday and $35 onsite. Children’s fun run registration is $15. All registered runners get a medal, t-shirt and prize bag to take home with them.

Art of Wine Expo. The Marietta Wine Market will host the seventh annual Art of Wine Expo this Sunday at 2 p.m. This event will take place at the Marietta Educational Gardens at 505 Kennesaw Ave. in Marietta. There will be more than 200 wines for tasting as well as a fabulous selection of food, live jazz and artwork from local artists.

An Artsy End to August. The summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean festival season is over yet. Come out this weekend to the Marietta Square for Marietta Art in the Park, featuring a juried exhibition of pieces from more than 150 artists from across the country.

Festival activities include the Marietta Cityscape Project, which will use recycled materials to design a small-scale replica of the town; craft stations for young artists; an interactive art alley; and a chalk art competition for kids in all grade levels. 

The festival runs Saturday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. For more information, visit www.artparkmarietta.com.

Southern Charm. Take an opportunity this weekend to see one of Georgia’s most famous films in one of Georgia’s most historic theaters. The Earl Smith Strand Theatre is presenting “Gone With the Wind” on both Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8 p.m.

Veg Out. Another annual Labor Day festival taking place this weekend is the Nibble and Noshfest, an event centered on Jewish food and entertainment, presented by Temple Kol Emeth.

Samples from local restaurants range from $1 to $4. The festival also features live music, art vendors and children’s activities. Admission is simple: bring two canned goods per family for MUST Ministry. All food collected will go straight to feeding the hungry in Atlanta.

The festival runs Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All the action takes place at Temple Kol Emeth, located at 1415 Old Canton Road in Marietta. Check www.noshfest.com for more information. 

Rock Out. Are you ready for the largest free one-day concert in the Atlanta area? The Celebrate Freedom Atlanta festival is this Saturday at Jim Miller Park in Marietta.

This all-day concert features a number of Christian-influenced artists. Radio station 104.7 The Fish will be broadcasting live. Music begins at 8 a.m., and the day concludes with a fireworks show at 11 p.m.

Admission is free, but you are required to present a ticket, which can be downloaded at www.celebratefreedomatlanta.com. Parking at Jim Miller Park, which is located at 2245 Callaway Road, is $5.

Dog Days. The dog days of summer are in full effect, but don’t let that stop you from pounding the pavement this weekend. The Dog Days 5K road race, which begins at 4385 Lower Roswell Road in east Cobb, will be held this Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

All runners will receive a t-shirt, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Registration fees will support local Cobb County charities and service projects of the Rotary Club of East Cobb.

Rock Out with Arena Rock. Find yourself wishing you could see Steve Perry and his Journey bandmates in person? That’s not possible these days, but you can see the next-best thing: the Journey tribute band Departure.

Departure will be at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre this Saturday for a show that starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

My, What a Show You Have: A different take on classic fairy tales, the musical “The Big Bad Wolf” will be performed this weekend by the Young Actors Playhouse at 11 Whitlock Avenue near the Marietta Square.

According to promotional materials, the play is “set in an imaginary village populated with a variety of fairy tale characters.”

The promotional materials also say this about the plot: “Little Red Riding Hood finds herself stuck between accepting herself for who she is, and who she wants the world to think she is. Goldilocks finds herself resenting the attention the world pays to Little Red, and the Boy Who Cried Wolf has a sheep that is straying from the flock for a better life.”

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for children.
