Happy Birthday, Smyrna. This weekend marks Smyrna’s birthday, and the city is throwing a big bash this Saturday to celebrate. The celebration begins at 6 p.m. and will include music, entertainment, food, a giant birthday cake and a fireworks finale at 10 p.m.

The event is free and will be held on the Village Green, located at 200 Village Green Circle. For more information, visit the city’s website.

Back to School. Mt. Paran Christian School has teamed up with The Earl Smith Strand Theatre to produce a new take on Disney’s “High School Musical” called “High School Musical, Jr.”

The production will feature catchy songs, exciting dance numbers and an all-student cast.

The first performance is this Friday at 8:00 p.m. Other performances will be on Aug. 2, 3, 5 and 9. Show times and tickets are available at The Earl Smith Strand Theatre’s website.

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre is located on the historic Marietta Square at 117 North Park Square.

Power Lunch. Jennifer Sandberg, partner at Fisher & Phillips LLP, will be the featured speaker at the Cobb Executive Women’s luncheon on Friday, Aug. 8.

The luncheon will be held at The Georgian Club. The doors will open at 11 a.m. for networking, and the program will start at 11:15 a.m.

Part of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Cobb Executive Women is a group dedicated to enhancing and supporting the relationships between professional women in the county.

For Cobb Executive Women members, tickets are $20 online and $35 at the door. For the general public, the prices are $30 online and $45 at the door. Online registration, which can be completed here, ends at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

A New Twist on an Old Tale. “Once Upon a Mattress” opens this weekend at The Marietta Performing Arts Center.

The play centers on the classic story of “The Princess and the Pea” while adding a funny, musical take on the tale with new characters and adventures.

The show runs from this Friday through Sunday, with performances at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

On the Home Front. If you are homeschooling your kids or are considering doing so, be sure to visit the Southeast Homeschooling Expo at the Cobb Galleria Centre this weekend.

The event will feature informative workshops for parents, an educational and interactive Kids Zone for children ages 4-12, a college fair and the opportunity to hear from homeschool speakers and exhibitors.

Happy Hour. Add something new to your weekend nights with The Strand Theatre’s Brew with a View event. The theatre has a great rooftop terrace with views of the Marietta Square and Kennesaw Mountain, and those 21 and older are invited for beer, wine and mixed drinks this Saturday night starting at 6:00 p.m.

Affair of the Art. Visit the Old Vinings Inn from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Saturday as it hosts an art show featuring works from local artist Victoria Disalvo.

Light appetizers and a specialty cocktail will be served at the event.

Staying Safe. Grab the kids and visit the Cobb County Safety Village this Friday morning for Family Fun Safety Day. This event will feature water-safety games, free fingerprinting kits, an up-close look at emergency vehicles and other activities for the whole family.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is $5 per person.

Cast Your Vote. Various local and state run-off elections will be held next Tuesday, July 22. Stay up to date on Cobb County-specific voting information by visiting the Cobb County Board of Elections website.

Go Braves. Are you a young professional that loves the Atlanta Braves? The Cobb Young Professionals (CYP) is hosting its Braves Night on Wednesday, July 23. CYP is a group within the Cobb Chamber of Commerce dedicated to promoting the workplace success of workers in their 20s and 30s.

The $25 per-person registration includes round-trip transportation to the game at Turner Field on the Historic Marietta Trolley, a game ticket with reserved seating in the “Top of the Chop” area, and pregame food and drinks. The trolley will leave The Chamber’s headquarters at 4 p.m.

Ladies Night Out. Join the Cobb Executive Women for their Summer Social next Thursday, July 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Henry’s Louisiana Grill. 

The event will feature a three-course meal and cooking demonstration from Chef Henry Chandler.

Part of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Cobb Executive Women is a group dedicated to enhancing and supporting the relationships between professional women in the county.

Grease Is the Word. Travel back to the 1950s this Saturday afternoon by seeing the classic movie “Grease” at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta.

Show time is 4 p.m., and tickets are $8 for the general public and $7 for seniors, students and members of the military. Visit the Strand Theatre’s website to reserve your spot in advance.

The theatre is located at 117 North Park Square.

Summer Concert Series. This Saturday night, pack a picnic and experience music beneath the starsatthe Summer Concert Series on the Village Green in Smyrna. Chris Stalcup and the Grange, an Americana rock-and-roll band, will play at 7 p.m.

The concert is free to attend. The Village Green is located at 200 Village Green Circle in Smyrna.

Grand Opening. Buckle, a men’s and women’s clothing store, has opened in Cumberland Mall.

According to the mall’s website, Buckle is “known for its unique mix of on-trend clothing, shoes and accessories” and “caters to style-conscious men and women who seek to express their individuality through fashion.”

To commemorate its grand opening, Buckle is offering shoppers chances to win gift cards through Aug. 10.

Celebrate Summer. Join the Coalition of Cobb County Business Associations and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce for the annual Summer JAM on Wednesday, July 16.

This event is a fun way to network and to learn more about Cobb County business associations.

The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cobb Civic Center, located at 548 S. Marietta Parkway. Members of the Coalition of Cobb County Business Associations can register for free online and $20 at the door. General admission is $10 in advance and $30 at the door.

Red, White & Blue. There is no shortage of Fourth of July events this Friday.

The annual Fourth of July Festival and Parade on the Marietta Square will begin at 10 a.m. with the Marietta Freedom Parade. The parade will start at Roswell Street and end at North Marietta Parkway. Be sure to get there early to claim your seats as this event draws close to 30,000 spectators. In addition to the parade, those attending can look forward to a post-parade festival and bell-ringing ceremony, outdoor concerts and, of course, fireworks to end the day.

The Lenox Mall Fourth of July celebration is back this year and has a full line-up of entertainment in addition to the legendary fireworks show. For complete information, visit the Lenox Square Mall website.

The Georgia Aquarium will be the site of the “Red, White, & Brew” barbecue and beer fest. Enjoy spectacular views of the Centennial Olympic Park fireworks show from the parking deck rooftop. The event will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and tickets are $55 per person in advance and $65 per person the day of. You must be 21 to attend.  

Who’s Hungry? Visit Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta this weekend for the Atlanta Food Festival. Those attending this family-friendly event can look forward to samplings from some of Atlanta’s hottest restaurants, caterers and food trucks. Kids can enjoy bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, waterslides and more.

News You Can Use. Smyrna Mayor A. Max Bacon will deliver the annual State of the City address next Thursday, July 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event is hosted by the Smyrna Area Council and the Smyrna Business Association.

Attendance is free, but registration is required and can be completed online by clicking here. Registration will close on Tuesday, July 8, at 12:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Smyrna Community Center, located at 200 Village Green Circle.

Batson-Cook Honored. Atlanta Galleria tenant Batson-Cook Construction has been awarded first-place awards by the Georgia Associated General Contractors (Georgia AGC) for the firm’s work on the Benton House Alpharetta and the Chattahoochee River Restoration projects.

The Georgia AGC aims to award general contractors and construction teams for exceptional project safety, meeting difficult job challenges, construction innovation, and excellence in project management and client service.

The company also received two Merit Awards from Georgia AGC for its work on Northside Hospital Hybrid Operating Room #4 in Sandy Springs and for the construction of Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Emergency Department and Surgery Addition project in Jasper, according to a recent press release.

School Will Soon Be in Session. Atlanta Galleria tenant Balfour Beatty Construction has completed the Solana Ranch Elementary School, a 68,000-square-foot campus situated on 11.65 acres in San Diego. Work on the sustainable campus began in November 2012, and the school will welcome new students this fall.

“We are vested in the community and share in the excitement and sense of pride,” said Brian Cahill, president of Balfour Beatty’s Southwest division in a press release. “It’s very gratifying to be part of the project team that built this beautiful new school where students, teachers, and staff can learn and grow in a healthy environment.”

Harley Ellis Devereaux Architects and Balfour Beatty Construction developed the campus. This is the second elementary school that Balfour Beatty has completed for the Solana Beach School District.

Taking Care of Business. Atlanta Galleria tenant The Shopping Center Group represented Sweetgreen in the health food chain’s June lease of 100 Kenmare Street, located in New York City.

The Kenmare Street location marks the chain’s fourth site in New York City. Other locations are in the Tribeca, Nomad and Williamsburg neighborhoods.

“Sweetgreen is looking to enter markets in neighborhoods,” said Taryn Brandes, a broker for The Shopping Center Group, in an article printed on The Commercial Observer’s website. “The food is authentic and so is their commitment to building real relationships in the communities where they operate.”
